To understand why, it helps to remember the numbers. For the better part of three quarters, the Giants were at their best, with the likes of Olivier Vernon and Deontay Green-Beckham combining to rush for over 150 yards. When things fell apart, the loss of Green-Beckham allowed the Patriots to make up a lot of ground with their defensive end rotation. The offense was just kind of a mess, too.

You never can tell how bad a team is going to feel going into Sunday's matchup, because nothing is certain. For the New England Patriots, it could mean that they've gotten back to what they did when the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles played one week ago and it feels like the same offense again. What does that mean? It could mean, for example, that Tom Brady will attempt a fourth touchdown pass of the season or that Tom Brady will not be able to run the ball or that the defense just isn't a good, hard-working team again.
It's possible the offense was simply too spread out on the defensive side of the ball in a season dominated by tight end Rob Gronkowski and the run game, or it could be that both teams have simply not played together enough this year. It's also possible that the Patriots offense just isn't sharp enough.
That could mean that the Patriots offense will need to put up big numbers from either end or both of its four starters if they want to beat the Jets. For the Jets to make a run, they'll either have to beat a unit so badly down by the time the Patriots do, or they'll need to beat one of the Jets' best quarterbacks if they want to do what is expected of them by coach Rex Ryan: come out and put the ball in their receivers' hands, have fun and get some wins.
That all seemed far more likely to happen with the Patriots having won 10 games in two seasons when they played the Jets on New Year's Eve and then losing in their home opener a month later. The Jets don't have any major offensive pieces. Ryan and co. are looking to avenge last season's debacle, but they've made little move this offseason to upgrade the defense from what they were in years past. In a season in which the offensive line hasn't been an issue at all and the receivers have been finding their groove after a slow start to their careers, the defense is the focus. In that regard, it is what it is.

Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey has told the Turnbull Government he has no reason to sell Telstra's copper network to NBN Co, arguing he cannot justify the price tag.
But Mr Hockey said it was a matter for Telstra and NBN Co to decide.
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told the ABC's 7.30 the government had been "absolutely clear" over the past 12 months that Telstra would have to pay what they were legally entitled to pay for the copper network, but that they had no reason to sell it.
But he said it was a question that would be decided by Telstra and NBN Co.
Mr Hockey was asked to comment by 7.30 about the budget's $20 million budget for the NBN Co, which includes $15 million to upgrade the copper network and $15 million to acquire a small network.
He refused to say how the NBN Co would fund its spending.
"It would be impossible to do that. There are a number of measures we're considering and some that I would have thought would be subject to debate, but not the NBN," Mr Hockey said.
"I haven't been given that power to say when we go to the Senate to provide those particular measures for discussion or when we will go into the Parliament and do something, but I think the point is we've already done some of those things."
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said he had been assured by the Government that the money for Telstra's network would come through the budget and said Mr Hockey had made that a point of order.
"It is really the Treasurer's job to sell our copper networks, because the Labor Party ran the copper network and now they're trying to bring in the NBN," he said.
"It's a little curious, to say they've done nothing for 12 months but say now they need $30 million to do a lot less, they're not going to get it."
"They are telling us we can't spend the money that they gave us when they took control of the Government, but they've also made sure they've got to get money back, so why on Earth would you give them a $5 million cut to the NBN?"
